About Wine |
![]() ![]() White WineThere are about 50 different important white wine grape varietals grown around the world today. The term varietal usually refers to wines that are non-European in origin. This is because most European wines are named after the region in which they are grown, such as Bordeaux, Chianti, Champagne, etc. Outside Europe most wines are named after the grape variety used to make the wine. This is true of white wine as well, such as Chardonnay. 24 white grape varietals are grown in California alone. White wine can vary greatly in taste and texture. Chardonnay is an excellent popular choice and has become the world's most often-purchased dry white wine. Muscat is an excellent choice for a sweeter wine. Or perhaps a more exotic White Burgundy will fill the bill. There is no shortage of varietals and appellations to choose from where white wine is concerned. Some of the major types are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurtzraminer, Italian White, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sake, Sauvignon/Fume Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, White Bordeaux, White Burgundy, and others. The following is a list of white wine types and where they grow best:
